Child Head Form Test

One of the design aims of the Team Poly "Smartbar" is to protect vehicles without increasing the danger to other road users.

The Head Injury Criteria (HIC) test allows a comparison between the Smartbar and alternative bull bar and vehicle configurations. In the testing, acceleration may be converted to an estimate of head injury risk, by calculation of the HIC value. If the HIC value of an impact exceeds 1000, the impact is likely to be fatal.

The Smartbar performed better then the steel or aluminium bars in all comparison tests as measured by the Head Impact Criterion. The Smartbar also recorded a better or similar HIC safety values than the unprotected vehicle.

Exhaustive Testing

Exhaustive testing shows Smartbar provides an effective protection outcome, without impairing airbag ‘no fire’ and ‘must fire’ deployment. Robust polyethylene provides a simple impact absorbing solution. In addition to the HIC test, Smartbar is tested to the European bumper bar standard ISO 2958. These tests demonstrate Smartbar’s shock absorbing ability, and superb damage control.
