WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Who’s behind Fred’s Arm?
Having operated within the 4WD industry for many years Mark and Sharon Makin have
been in a position to identify opportunities for value adding that will meet the needs of
4WD drive enthusiasts and regular users of 4WD’s for camping and leisure activities.
Mashemme Pty Ltd was formed to manufacture and promote Fred’s Arm, a new
innovation in vehicle mounted awning fitment.
What is Fred’s Arm?
Fred’s Arm is a patented pivoting mechanism that allows up to a 2.5mtr vehicle mounted
awning, positioned on the side of a vehicle (4WD or Van), to be relocated in less the 30
seconds to the rear of the vehicle, with ease and safety.
Who would use a Fred’s Arm?
Fred's Arm is directed specifically to consumers that share a common enjoyment of the great outdoors. Be it camping, touring, 4wding, fishing, sports or a simple picnic. Anyone with an approriate vehicle (Van or 4WD) can utilise this product.
For those with an exisiting awning that is fitted to a suitable roof rack currently side mounted, you will only need to purchase the Fred's Arm mechanism.
Those who have an appropriate roof rack and want to purchase an awning with the Fred's Arm can do so as a package.
Those with none of the above who would like to fit a unit, we are more then happy to discuss your requirements and supply the complete set up.
Why would I fit a Fred’s Arm.?
Fred’s Arm was developed to fulfil a need. As many like minded people, over past years
while camping with family & friends Mark has been thinking of a way he could carry and
mount a descent size awning (greater than the width of the rear of the vehicle) to the rear
of his 4WD, as this is where all meal preparation is carried out and where you most often
need protection and shade from the elements. When used in conjunction with a 2.5mtr
awning Fred’s Arm does give you just that.
It also keeps the cook happy, and as the saying goes “when the cooks happy every ones
happy”.
What type of rack will they fit?
Fred’s Arm has been developed to suit the most popular Deluxe Pack racks as well as the Rhino Commercial Cross bar System.
Fred's Arm is currently available in 7 different models.
FA- Fits the ARB, ECB, deluxe pack racks.
FA-TJM Fits the TJM deluxe pack rack
FA-RS Fits the Rally Speed deluxe pack rack.
FA-RR Fits the Rhino Commercial Roof rack system. (Commercial cross bars only or fitted with steel luggage basket)
FA-RRLB Fits the Rhino Commercial rack system fitted with the Rhino Alloy Luggage Tray.
FA-RM Fits Rack Master Platform rack.
FA-ARBTR Fits ARB Tradesman Rack.
Can I fit it to my Rhino Sports bars, Rola or Thule Racks?
The FA-RRLB can be used as long as an Alloy Luggage Basket is fitted.
If not NO, this is due to the extrusion used in these products, they are not compatible with our moutning system.
Does it matter what side of the vehicle Fred’s Arm is mounted?
Yes, it must be fitted to the Right Hand Side of the vehicle.
As the main awning support channel and pivoting arm is a universal unit, which attaches to the necessary mounting brackets, which determine the actual model of Fred’s Arm required.
When fitted to a narrower guttered vehicle such as the Toyota Prado, Holden Jackeroo when the awning is in the rear position the awning will sit off centre. By fitting the unit to
the R/H/Side this off set will favour the Left Hand Side, allowing you to make the most of the awning coverage. If fitted to the L/H/S the extra coverage would be over the door and rendered useless.
Can I still us my Awning in the side position?
Yes, Fred’s Arm has been designed to maximise the use of your awning, in either the Side or Rear poisons.
Can I use more the 1 awning at a time?
There is no reason why you can’t use 2 awnings at the same time. You can have a fixed unit on the L/H/S and the relocatable one on the Right.
It is necessary to mount the one on the left a little lower to allow the 2 units to over lap.
What style awning can be fitted to Fred’s Arm?
Any bag style awning up to 2.5mtr long and 12kg in weight, this also includes the Ezi Awn retractable awning.
The Fimma awning is not suitable due to the need for a solid mount.
What is Fred’s Arm made of?
The Pack rack models consist of all Aluminium components, were the Rhino models are a mixture of steel and alloy components.
All steel components are sand blasted before powder coating; the alloy components are acid dipped pre powder coating.
All units come finished powder coated in Sahara Black.
All hardware is Zinc plated.
Can I get it in a different colour?
Yes, as long as it’s a powder coat colour. This will be a special order, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 and you will have to wait for the next product run.
Can I fit Fred’s Arm myself?
It’s up to you; each kit comes complete with step by step fitting instructions.
The Pack rack models are a more detailed fit then the Rhino Systems.
Can Fred’s Arm be used in conjunction with a roof top tent?
Yes we have several units already fitted with roof top tents.
The Tent has to be turned so that it opens to the Left hand side.
As the rear locking bracket mounts to the rear of the roof rack, this prevents the Tent from opening to the rear, and as the awning is fitted to the R/H/Side this leaves only the L/H/Side clear.
Now you have coverage at the rear of the vehicle there is no need for the tent to open to the back, also opening the tent to the L/H/Side gets the ladder out of the kitchen.
Were can I buy Fred’s Arm?
We are currently building a Dealer network, if you don’t have a dealer in your area we are more then happy to ship direct.
